Townsend is located at the Cades Cove entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Cades Cove is host to over two million visitors each year. Visitors to Townsend, also known as "The Peaceful Side of the Smokies," are lovers of the outdoors. They enjoy camping, tubing on the Little River, hiking, biking, horseback riding and fishing. From the moment I set foot on this beautiful land, I knew I was in a special place. For many years, this has been farm land. Along with friends, the owner gradually cleared the pine groves to make pasture land, and created the rolling hillsides of grazing land from what had been forest. There are still plenty of wooded areas and hardwoods with paths that lead to the tops of the ridges. It is for now host to cattle, and has been for some years. The land offers 360 degree views of the mountains. The several barns that have served for years stand like monuments to days gone by. A farmhouse with a stream running through the front yard greets those who visit, and adds a sense of history and charm to the land beyond it. There are streams, natural springs and ponds. There are hidden hollows - one called "New Ground" and another called "Muddy Holler." This land has been lovingly cared for and beautifully maintained. Every nook and cranny that can be reached by tractor has been bush-hogged so that all 122 acres have the feel of a carefully maintained lawn. It is breathtaking!
